The early Birdman catches the worm! American professional skateboarder Tony Hawk has revealed that he got into the crypto economy all the way back in 2012, after he familiarized himself with the crypto asset.
He read about it in relation to the Silk Road marketplace at that time, and was convinced that Bitcoin is the future of finance.
The famed skateboarder, often referred to as Birdman, discussed his cryptocurrency adventure taking the stage at the Bitcoin 2021 conference in Miami where he spent some time with Bitcoin enthusiasts this past weekend.
Discussing the cryptocurrency revolution with the cofounder of Augur, Jeremy Gardner, the legendary skateboarder revealed how he discovered Bitcoin during the time when the infamous Silk Road black market existed.
Fascinated by the technology, he immediately researched how to buy Bitcoin, and purchased some:
“I held, pretty much. I didn’t do much with it. I was watching it obviously. I was holding on to my Bitcoin and Charity Water was the first charity that I knew of that accepted bitcoin as a donation so in my infinite wisdom I gave him four back in 2012.”
He donated the funds to Charity Water, and the organization sold the bitcoins to fund the charity for far less than what Bitcoin is worth today.
Tony Hawk further revealed that he is auctioning 50 limited edition Bitcoin skateboards for charity, and there is also a single limited-edition skateboard that says “End Fiat” up for grabs as well, signed by the fabled man himself.
